In Which the Author Checks In To See How Your December Is Going

Don't know about you but mine's pretty okay so far! Finished up Nanowrimo at just over 50k, but I hit that on the 20th and then promptly stopped writing. I had a short term job assignment that ate up all my free time and energy so I just took the win and left it. But I did get the hardest section of the upcoming Inferno drafted, albeit roughly. I hope to have another section completed by the end of the year. With any luck I'm on track to have a finished first draft by the end of 1Q 2015, and maybe shmaybe the finished book by the anniversary date! Which if you're just joining us is of course June 7, the day after the barricades, when Javert pulled his BASE jumping without a suit trick.

I also haven't had much of a chance to keep working at getting the site back online. I hope to at least upload the broken images and reviews that somehow didn't make the migration. By the end of the year, that would be a great thing.

I am trying to get a short Christmas story done for the end of the year but I don't know if it will get finished on time or not. If I don't post again before the end of the month, have a wonderful holiday season, whatever you celebrate, or even if you don't: the sooner 2015 gets here and 2014 goes out the door, I'm sure the better for a lot of us.

UPDATE 1 In Which The Author Has Something You May Like To See

Ready?

The Les Misérables Image Gallery is back online!

No, really! Ta da!

Well, most of it, anyway. I'm still trying to find some of the pictures, I'm going through a lot of disks. I stupidly didn't download the site before I lost it before. So, patience would be nice.

Please note, the URL has changed. It's now pont-au-change.com with the hyphens in it. If you don't put the hyphens in it you get a whole nother site that you don't want to go to. Fucking squatters. Anyway. Ahem.

Next on my checklist: the Media Comparison Checklist! When that's up I'll post again.

UPDATE 1: Annnd the Media Comparison Checklist is now up too! NOTE: the links from the main directory of the checklist work; the return links in the reviews themselves do not all work yet, I have to go through each file and line edit individually. But the reviews are back. Now I just have to write more of them :-D

oh and PS yes Inferno is getting written, it's going pretty well so far. Won't be as finished as I want it to be by the end of Nanowrimo but, I'm getting book on the page so every one of those is a win as far as I'm concerned.

Okay, enough chitchat. Have fun with the pictures.

UPDATE In Which The Author Teases Something...In Rhyme....

Remember Remember the Fifth Of November
And the fifth book of Pont-au-Change
Because V is a letter as well as a number
And mostly is short for Valjean

And way back in Sanctuary some may remember
That both Jean Valjean and Javert
Came to realize some think the fifth of November
Is a holiday full of good cheer

So to celebrate this year the fifth of November
While Nanowrimo-ing my plot
For the fifth book Inferno, a gift I will render:
So on Wednesday check back at THIS SPOT....

UPDATE: Arlene had a little blog
That she was supposed to update
And every time she went to start
Some stuff came in to frustrate

But rest assured the thing that then
was supposed to be announced here
will soon go up, just not sure when
at least before the new year ;-D*

____________
*just kidding, give it about a week.

In Which The Author Has A Teaser For Book Five

Hey, so, I know I haven't even written it yet but, here's the cover for Inferno:

created by the awesome Mireille Sillander http://mireillesillander.carbonmade.com/ who also did the cover for Honor. Have you been keeping track of all the stuff on the covers? Why yes there is a method to the madness.

The cover may change the background when it finally goes to print; I had a different and more fire-y looking design in mind but when it came to do the image I had such a small sample and to get a bigger one means forking money over to a stock company and I don't have $25 to get some damn virtual wallpaper, so, yeah. Besides, I do like how this came out, the way it looks as if the side has been charred... we'll see.

Another note: it is now almost entirely probable that volume 6 will be called Redemption, not Requiem. I have not made the final decision on that yet but it's leaning in that direction. It's not like I haven't changed names before, that's for sure. In the very beginning, book 4 was called Harbinger and book 5 was Identity. Yeah, I have no idea what I was thinking either :-D so yeah, I'll definitely post when I've made my mind up. If I do change it to Redemption then I'm reserving the word Requiem for a section within the book.

Three days to Nanowrimo, and I'm stoked. I will begin working on Inferno. I have not yet written anything that's not notes. So when I start, it will start from scratch. If you want to follow progress, my Nano id is "acharris." If you're doing Nano, add me as a writing buddy; I'll add you back and we can cheer each other on!

One more bit of business. It concerns the website. Apparently someone bought my domain name. And put some junk there. If you go to the old pontauchange site you will see what I mean. Also, what is up with that logo, it looks worse than some of my old ones :-D Anyway, if you miss the Media Comparison Checklist of the Gallery, like I do, don't forget there's a donation button over there on the left. Earmark a donation for a new website and there will be one by the end of the year. Consider it a Nanowrimo sponsorship ;-) I have no idea what name I'll go with, if I have to go to .net or something, but if I can scrape together $50 I can get a site and domain name secured for a year. And then I can review that stupid movie musical finally! :-D

Three more days, and here we go again...

In Which The Author Copypastas Herself

(lol, I'm just reproducing word for word what I just put up on the Nanowrimo site, because lazy and hey it looks good so why not)

So I'm doing volume 5 of my series Pont-au-Change for this year's Nano, and I'm having a sale on the first four volumes to celebrate! (the series will end at 6, just so you know). It's called Inferno. And it's going to rock like, um, a rock like thing. Anyway.

Here's the series page on Smashwords:

or type this into your browser: http://www.smashwords.com/books/byseries/6475

The 25% discount runs from RITE NAO thru the entire month of November. You can download the ebooks into whatever format you need for your reader, or even as a PDF. If your historical fiction tastes run somewhere between real events and fanfiction this series has enough of both for you.

Here are the coupon codes for getting your discounts (not case sensitive):

Resurrections: LQ67C new price=$2.24 (regularly $2.99)
Sanctuary: BC45Y new price=$2.99 (regularly $3.99)
Adrift: JZ97Y new price=$2.99 (regularly $3.99)
Honor: MR95W new price=$3.74 (regularly $4.99)

These books are 1-200K words each so that's a huge value for reading volume! And they're getting really good reviews too.

Add me as a writing buddy to track progress on Book 5! I will add you back and cheer you on!

This series has taken almost 20 years to get this far, and we're closing in on the finale. Thanks for reading and go Nano!

In Which The Author Updates Y'all On Nanowrimo Progress

Yep, I'm going to be working on book again during Nano. I was hoping to get some writing done this month as well but it's all prep at this point. The good news is I have Inferno almost entirely laid out on index cards. I've always had a rough chart of how things will go but now I have a timeline and a set sequence of events. I'm just hoping I'm not over planning :-D But I am definitely getting excited about starting the next book. This is the one I've been the most excited about since the beginning. The penultimate. The setting up of the massive tying of loose threads that will be book six, aka Requiem.

I'll be updating more frequently once book writing starts. Just because. I'm hoping also to have another holiday short fiction done. Those started out as one offs, back when I had the website set up to publish the chapters in installments and then send it to print on completion. But with the ebook version I'm not doing the installments, but I'd still like to have a little something to share. So it's a little bass ackwards. But I'll see what I can do. Right now I'm just so jazzed, this is the most writing, or thinking about writing, I've done in quite awhile. Remember I started Honor back in like 2007. Took me this long to get the thing out and done, and it was a chore for a good long while of it. But Inferno feels like the first two books, the kind that just fall out of my head and onto the page and go "Ta Daaaaa!"

So, here's to hoping.

Also, if you feel like donating a cup of coffee to me during this time of the year, pumpkin spice or otherwise, please feel free to hit the donation button over on the left. It will help out a lot, and definitely motivate me to do that extra short story. I'm thinking of doing a Patreon to raise funds to restart the website, with the movie reviews and the gallery and the other stuff, but for right now, I'm saving up my pennies and just working on the book-like thing.

Next post will probably be the last one before Nano kicks off, but if I don't get to one, see you when I'm hip deep in rough draft.

Be excellent to one another.

UPDATE In Which The Author Finds Herself in Pretty Much Total Agreement

Yeah, I tried watching it again and yeah... still disappointed.

There's another video I want to share, but I can't find it, I'll try later.

(eta: FOUND IT! and it's AWESOME)

In Which The Author Oh Look Store

Got a notice from Cafepress that I sold a couple of things. I forgot I had a store.

Here's the link to the store:

The "What Would Javert Do?" art is on tshirts, coffee cups, and a Christmas ornament.

The blog is not letting me put a permanent link on this page yet. I'll work on that.

Anything I can get will help, believe me.

In Which The Author Shares A Neat Thing

So today I found this website that has t shirts. Big deal, I hear you say. These are t shirts that are designed after classic books. Big deal again, I hear you say, again.

What if I told you that the design actually consists of the entire text of the book it's about?

Buh? I hear you say.

Here, let me show you something that might be relevant to the discussion: Hunchback of Notre Dame, the entire (English) text, on a tshirt:

Yep, all that design is text. The whole novel is on that shirt. Isn't that awesome? There are about 100 classic books in Litograph's catalog right now. Unfortunately Les Misérables is not among them but hey, that would be like 5 tshirts, right? But they do have A Tale of Two Cities also. Seriously, check the catalog, it's amazing.

So guess what I'm going to be getting when I get my first paycheck. Or my royalty check. Whichever comes first. Yep, you betcha.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled waiting around for me to start the next volume.

In Which The Author Rings A Triangle And Yells, "Come And Get It" UPDATED

It's done, it's done. Honor is complete and live on Smashwords. One day late for Javert's birthday, but it's not like he minds. Much.

There are some formatting issues I can't fix right now but they don't affect the story, just the navigation in the second half with regards to the Table of Contents and stuff. That should get fixed in a few days and I'll reupload it.

Now if you have already bought the book, you can download the complete version at no extra charge, just re-download the file to the reader of your choice. f you haven't bought it yet, guess what, there's a sale on the website! It's a promotion through the publisher, save 25% by using the coupon code  SSW25 at checkout. It's good through the end of July. Come August, not only will the books no longer be on sale, but they will be at a higher base price, as I raised the rates across the board to get me just a little more in the royalties department. So if you've waited, don't wait too much longer to get them, seriously.

But wait, I can hear you crying. What's next? Well I'll be spending the next few months dealing with life stuff and trying to get stabilized. I have already decided to use this year's Nanowrimo in November to start laying out the next book and getting a lot of the interacting storylines down in a semblance of order. Between now and then, most of my creating is going on the back burner to percolate into something useable.

So, I'll let you all catch up on what's been going on. Meet me here when you're done for tea and sympathy. Welcome to the big ol' clusterf**k that's been in my head since I first came up with the idea for the series. I knew these things were coming up. You may think you know things will be okay because you've seen the main characters after this point during the Guernsey sequences, but, well, without spoiling things, you'd be pretty wrong about that, for varying values of "okay."

Honor is in the bag. Next stop: Inferno.

Thank you for reading.

PS: if you are so inclined, may I point out the link to your left that reads "The Bishop's Fund" which is connected to a Paypal donation link. If you feel sufficiently entertained by the current installment, kindly consider throwing in a couple of dollars to buy a starving writer a cup of coffee, it would be greatly appreciated.

PPS: Hey, this is my 100th blog post! Congrats again to me! Gold stars for everyone!

ETA: If you are one of the people who donated funds in February 2012 who were offered book download codes as a thank you, I don't have email addresses to send them to, just a list of names. If you are one of those, reply to this post with your name and email address(they will NOT be published as all comments are moderated) and I will send you the code for the free download. Sorry about the wait and the confusion.

In Which The Author Shows Up Late As Usual

I can sum up the last few months in the following:

tl;dr

Let's get down to business. Honor is 98% completed and will be uploaded in its entirety either on July 14 (Bastille Day) or on Javert's birthday (July 20). The main factor in the schedule is how long it takes me to code the second half for e-book publication. If you have already purchased the first half of Honor, when the upload shows up and the price doubles do not fret; all you need do is re-download the thing. You've already paid for it, you will not be charged more. If you have been waiting to download Honor, you will be paying the new price for it. It's up to you.

However if you haven't downloaded any of them, Smashwords is having an across the site summer/winter sale (depending on your personal hemisphere) and I will be discounting the first three books from whenever Honor uploads through the end of the month. Starting in August the prices will go up across the board. Again, it's up to you.

Also, I'd like to draw attention to the donation button to the left, aka The Bishop's Fund. If you like the finished book and would like to tip me a cup of coffee for it, it sure would be appreciated.

I have not started Inferno yet, though I've been meaning to for awhile; I think I had to get Honor done before Inferno let me near it. Inferno is the one I've been waiting fifteen years to write; it's the pivotal book, the one with all the stuff I've been dying to share. I'm just so darned glad to be finally getting to it.

I don't have anything in the way of extras to share at this point, so I'll just share this. It's informative for the second half of Honor, because, well, history and politics and stuff. Also it's funny.

See you in a few weeks.

In Which The Author Briefly Surfaces

Hi there. I am now in the process of getting settled in new (old) surroundings. Just wanted to let you all know I'm still around. Hoping to get something to report about the rest of Honor in the next week or so.

Just wanted to let everyone know the website is expiring tomorrow. Normally I use part of my tax money to renew the website and domain registration but it all went to getting the hell out of Virginia and away from the freak show (about which I am going to begin writing copiously, now that I'm 3000 miles away from the crazy guy with the knife) so I have nothing to give GoDaddy to save the page. I considered throwing them the $20 to at least keep the domain name but I don't even have that. Everything I have left is going to the landlord of my new place so I have a roof over my head. So, basically, I am going to cross fingers and hail Mary -- or a Jean Valjean, in this case. Not like the site's doing anything anyway, I just haven't had the energy to update or maintain it for awhile now. Still, ouch.

tl;dr, this blog is now the sole online presence for the Pont-au-Change series until further notice. Except, of course, the Smashwords site where the books may be purchased.

Thanks for sticking with me during this transition. Stuff's hard right now but believe it or not, it was worse before. Just keep swimming, Dory.

In Which the Author Begs a Small Indulgence

Sorry about the lack of posting and stuff. In the middle of moving back to home-like climes. Will post properly sometime next week with all the news, weather and sports.

Meanwhile happy slightly belated anniversary Marius and Cosette!

(this is me right about now, just sayin)

In Which the Author Posits a Question About The Book

Happy New Years to all! Okay, that's done with. On to business. ("To Business!" *clink glasses* *blank stare* "Oh I'm sorry I thought you were raising a toast" / MythAdventures)

As you all may know or not, I'm having another rough patch. But that's not what this is about, it's just setting the tone for the question I have. The thing is that the energy of dealing with the real life stuff (unemployment, keeping lights on and roof overhead, fighting with state aid agencies, plotting escape from east coast, stuff like that) has eaten most of my available writing energy. I'm just not working as well or fast as I had hoped. I have some done, just not the rest. So here's the question:

Would it be worth things to you, the reader, to update the book with the two new sections I have ready to go, instead of all five remaining? The price would change slightly for new purchasers to reflect added material but if you've already bought and downloaded it, then downloading a new copy will not cost you anything more. That way, you get content, I get a little more done, and can then take another breather till I can get the last three sections finished and the thing completely in the can.

I do have to say, though, that one of the two sections is digression. History time! Everyone's favorite part of both the original Les Misérables and Pont-au-Change. But it is enlightening to say the least, particularly if you're interested in more current issues of today, because it goes a ways to explain certain global realities currently making news.

The other section is a Valjean and Javert one, though, so yay. I have half another Marius and Cosette section done but who cares about them, right? :-P But they have a lot going on to set up for stuff happening in the next book, so, it's a necessary evil. Still, I can hold that off till the final update. What's more important is bring on Valjean and Javert dammit, right?

So, please let me know, would you like an updated book with 40% of the remaining content added in, sooner, or would you rather wait for the whole 100% finished book, later this spring? Sooner if I can manage that but if I can't I have to face reality and look at more months than weeks to getting it done.

I'll just leave you with this little thing I found here, courtesy of Cracked:

Go ahead on, it's your move.*
